Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is one of the most celebrated coffees on the market today and most gourmet coffee drinkers know it well. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee has actually been admired by gourmet coffee drinkers for more than a century.

In fact, prior to World War II Jamaica was the world leading coffee exporter. After World War II, the British colonial government (they controlled Jamaica at the time) established the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica to regulate a rigorous quality control program. At the time undisciplined coffee bean production was on the verge of ruining the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee reputation. Thankfully, the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee reputation was saved and today is considered one of the world's finest coffees.

Jamaicans eventually achieved their independence from the British but they wisely decided to continue the Jamaican Blue Mountain policy laid out by the British. This means that all Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans are wet-processed at government sanctioned mills then dry-milled, cleaned, and graded at centralized government controlled Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee production facilities.

There are a large number of generic Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee exports on the market and a few labels from specific Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee estates. Generic Jamaican Blue Mountain coffees are for the most part excellent coffees. They are an impressive version of the Caribbean coffee taste profile; rich and soft, with a mild acidity. You should never really consider any Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee generic. The price alone says enough and even a "bad" Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee will beat any commercial coffee hands-down.

Beyond the generic types, you can also find a few excellent Jamaican Blue Mountain estate coffees on the market. Alex Twyman's Old Tavern Estate is one of the more famous private Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee exports on the market. This coffee is truly something special and well worth the price to anyone who enjoys great coffee. The RSW Estates is another Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee export of some fame. The RSW Estates refers to three family-owned coffee plantations that all process their coffee beans at a common mill. Their traditional method of processing Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans makes a big impact on the taste of the coffee.

As a final note about Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, you should be on the lookout for Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee blends. Often these blends contain very few actual Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans. They are usually overpriced and are simply trying to capitalize on the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee's fame. Some particularly deceptive coffee makers even offer Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee "style" blends. These contain no Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans whatsoever. While some may indeed be good coffees, they are not a true Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.
