Most people do not realize that you do not need any fancy equipment to roast coffee beans. In reality, home coffee roasting does not require any fancy equipment. Coffee beans can be roasted with an ordinary frying pan or cast iron skillet on your stovetop with surprisingly good results. When using a frying pan or skillet, expect the roast of the coffee beans to be uneven looking. If you happen to have a stovetop popcorn popper, one of those with a handle used to stir the popcorn, try using it instead of a frying pan for more evenly roasted coffee beans. You should also consider that roasting coffee beans at home on the stovetop will produce quite a bit of smoke. If you do not have a fan over your stovetop, be sure to at least keep a window open. Begin by heating the pan to about the same cooking temperature as you would use to cook a hamburger or some other kinds of meat on. If you have a thermometer handy, aim for 500 °F (260 °C). Now it is time to add the green coffee beans. Stir the beans constantly! The more you stir them the more evenly roasted they will be. After about five minutes the coffee beans should begin making crackling sounds and begin to smoke. Keep on stirring them and watch the beans closely. Coffee beans change color rapidly so be sure to take them off the stove as soon as they are roasted done enough for your liking. (Check out Roast Profile-Coffee for more info.) You may actually want to take off them a little bit early because the coffee beans will continue to roast even after you take them away from the heat. As soon as you remove them from the heat, pour them into a metal container. A metal colander works perfectly. Stir the beans to help speed the cooling process and to break any excess chaff off from the coffee beans. Home roasting coffee beans on the stovetop is easy and inexpensive. No special equipment is required and not much skill is required either. If you can cook hamburgers then you can certainly roast coffee on the stovetop as well. This is actually the traditional method of roasting coffee beans and is to this day the most common way to roast coffee beans in many parts of the world. If you are interested in roasting coffee at home but don't want to spend a lot of money on equipment before you have tested the waters then this the perfect way to get your feet wet. Of course, equipment especially designed to roast coffee is going to produce the best results but if you have never had fresh roasted coffee then you are likely to be in for a real treat with coffee beans roasted on the stovetop. | |
