As strange as it might sound, you can also roast coffee beans in a hot air popcorn popper. This has actually become a popular method over the years. Not just because a lot of households have hot air popcorn poppers but also because roasting coffee in hot air popcorn poppers usually produces surprisingly well roasted coffee beans. If you do decide to try this method of home coffee roasting, please be extra careful. Popcorn poppers are not designed to roast coffee beans and could possibly malfunction in some way. The best hot air popcorn poppers to use when roasting coffee are those where the hot air comes out of holes in the side of it, instead of the bottom. Pour coffee beans into the machine until they stop swirling around. As the beans heat up and begin drying out they will begin to swirl, much like popcorn kernels would do normally. It should take about seven to ten minutes before the coffee beans first crackle. Coffee beans often produce a large amount of chaff while roasting and chaff may well come out of the popcorn popper so be prepared. If possible, roast the beans outdoors or under an exhaust fan. The coffee beans may also begin to smoke at this time. If you like you coffee lightly roasted (American Roast or City Roast), you should keep a very close eye on the beans at this point. It will not take long (about a minute, depending on the popper) before they begin the second crack. Once this happens, the coffee will be about medium roasted. Keep roasting the coffee beans until they reach the desired color. Visit our Roast Profile Chart to learn more. As soon as the beans have reached the desired roasting color, remove the beans from the popcorn popper and place them in a metal container to cool. Stir the beans constantly to speed the cooling process and remove any excess chaff. After the coffee beans have cooled down, you can store them in a sealed container in a cool, dry place. | |
