Health Facts About Coffee

Most people enjoy a steaming cup of coffee when they wake up. Others enjoy the beverage throughout the day. But what benefits or damage does coffee have on the body?

In this article we are going to leave behind any and all theories, and instead focus on the health facts about coffee.

Here are some helpful health facts about coffee.

. Coffee contains caffeine, which when consumed promotes wakefulness. It does this by interfering with a chemical in the body called adenosine, which induces sleep.
. Caffeine also increases your alertness and can alter your mood slightly.
. Caffeine has been proven to decrease muscle pain. It also gives the drinker heightened endurance and mental acuity.
. Coffee by itself (without sugar, cream, milk etc) has little or no nutritive value. It has hardly any calories, no sodium, no carbohydrates and no cholesterol.
. Caffeine goes to your brain quickly (in about 20-30 minutes) and the effects can last for up to 6 hours.
. The more regularly you drink coffee, the less response you will get from the caffeine. In other words, if you drink a lot of coffee, you won't get as much of a caffeine boost as someone who doesn't drink coffee on a regular basis.
. Coffee increases energy expenditure. This means that after you drink coffee, you are apt to burn more calories than if you hadn't drank the coffee.
. Caffeine is addictive, and once hooked, can cause drinkers to suffer from side effects such as dizziness and headaches.
. Caffeine affects the central nervous system, prompting your adrenal glands to release adrenaline, which makes your heart beat faster and adds glucose to your system. This is the main reason you feel energized after enjoying a cup of coffee.

There are only a small number of health facts about coffee and most of them aren't bad. The jury is still out though on how healthy or unhealthy coffee really is. More and more studies come out every day but only a few offers any solid proof.
