Famous Flavors of Coffee

Flavored coffees have actually been around in many forms almost since people first began drinking coffee. Of course, back then it was usually something as simple as adding a cinnamon stick to a cup of already brewed coffee. Having said that, it wasn't until the early 1980's that flavored coffee really began to take on the shape that we are familiar with today.

When the revolution began back in the early 1980's flavored coffee drinkers represented only a very small portion of coffee drinkers and were mainly produced by small gourmet coffee roasters in a bid to open up their coffee houses to a wider audience, even to those who didn't normally drink coffee. Flavored coffee attracted people that typically didn't like the taste of coffee due to its strong, bitter and astringent taste. The added flavors help mask the taste and makes coffee appealing to an audience that normally would not drink it.

One rather unexpected result of flavored coffee being mainly introduced in coffee houses was that the consumer quickly became more discerning than the average coffee drinker. They were gourmet coffee drinkers in their own right and only the best flavored coffee products would ultimately succeed. Thus the first "Famous Flavors of Coffee" list was born and included Amaretto, Irish Cream, Vanilla and Chocolate.

In an effort to keep up with expectations, many more flavors were introduced into the market. By far the most successful category of flavors that were introduced was the sweet, creamy and strongly aromatic nut flavors. It's not unfair to say that many coffee roasters at the time considered flavored coffees more of a fad but nut flavors (in particular Hazelnut) grew in popularity so quickly that this myth was quickly dispelled.

By 1990 nut flavors had changed the face of the most famous flavors of coffee and the list looked something more like this; French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Irish Cream, Vanilla Nut, Nut Cream and Chocolate. While Amaretto was still wildly popular in Europe it had been replaced by Carmel in America's famous flavors of coffee list.

While many new flavors have been introduced in the last 20 years none have had such a huge impact on the market. Today many gourmet coffee roasters offer more than 100 different flavor choices but the list of famous flavors of coffee is almost unchanged from twenty years ago. Below you can find our current famous flavors of coffee list.
