Decaffeinated Coffee and Health

Decaffeinate coffee and health issues are becoming extremely popular in today's society. Concerns have been growing in recent years over the correlation between high blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia, stomach problems, caused by the overindulgence in coffee. Although coffee is still the number one choice of hot beverage for the majority of Americans, more and more people are considering making the switch to decaffeinated coffee.

Many people find that while they love the taste of coffee, excessive consumption often leaves them feeling jittery and anxious. Many long term caffeine addicts have discovered that they have developed insomnia. Add to this the fact that caffeine is in itself highly addictive and that the human body is prone to building up a resistance to this chemical, and a vicious circle begins. More coffee is consumed in order to account for the lack of sleep, leading to yet another sleepless night.

In the past there have been some health concerns about the methods used to remove the caffeine from coffee beans, because in many circumstances this was done via the use of solvents. In some studies excessive consumption of coffee which has been decaffeinated via solvents has been shown to be linked to an increased risk of heart disease, especially among women. However, these studies have not proven to be conclusive and there are a great many brands of decaffeinated coffee available which utilize a solvent free method of decaffeination. This is where the caffeine is removed by soaking the pre-roasted beans in water.

It is important to note however that the decaffeination process, while removing around 97% of the total caffeine, does not remove it all so excessive consumption may still lead to problems for caffeine sensitive people. Fully decaffeinated coffees are available but are extremely rare.
