Coffee, in its many various forms is one of the most widely drunk beverages in the world today. Some people estimate that around one-third of all tap water in the United States is utilized in making this popular and stimulating drink. Throughout history, coffee has been both victimized and prasied for its ability to have an effect on the human mind and body. On the positive side, the caffeine contained in coffee is a potent and popular stimulant, considered by many to be the ideal way to begin the day, or to boost flagging concentration. Caffeine is also known to boost the overall effectiveness of certain painkillers, such as aspirin and paracetamol. Coffee is also considered to contain chemicals which act upon production levels of the body's own stimulants, cortisone, and adrenaline. As yet these chemicals and their origin are undetermined, but are thought to be unrelated to caffeine and so should also be found in decaffeinated coffee. It has also recently been claimed that coffee consumption can also reduce the risk of developing diabetes mellitus and of cirrhosis. Despite all these benefits however, coffee does have a dark side; as excessive regular consumption can easily lead you to develop a coffee health problem. Due to its laxative and diuretic abilities too much coffee can lead to upset stomachs. Cosmetic issues such as staining of the teeth can develop and a great many people often experience caffeine related anxiety and insomnia. If you are one of these people limiting your coffee intake and avoiding it altogether after 4pm, or switching to a decaffeinated version may be advisable. Pregnant women are often advised to significantly cut down on coffee consumption as it is considered that excessive consumption (eight cups a day) may lead to possible damage to the fetus. | |
