Coffee Dictionary (H-I-J)



Hard - A term used to describe harsh tasting or poor quality coffee.

Hardness - In coffee terms, hardness often relates to quality. There are exceptions to this rule but in general the harder the bean the more flavor and acidity it has. Coffee beans become harder the higher up they are grown.

Harrar (Harar) - This coffee is considered to the best that Ethiopia has to offer. Harrar is often compared to wine because it is such a complex coffee. A must-try on any coffee drinker's list.

Hawaii - Hawaii is famous for its Kona coffees. Kona coffee has developed a reputation for being world-class and it has the price tag to prove it. While many people do consider Kona coffee to be overpriced, the truest testament to its great taste is that there is no shortage of people willing to buy it.

Heavy Roast - A term used for coffee roasted darker than medium brown. Heavy Roast may range in color from dark brown to almost black.

High Roast - A synonym for coffee beans roasted to medium dark, somewhere between medium brown and dark roast. This roasting style results in a smoother cup of coffee but also sacrifices some of flavor.

High Grown - Coffees grown at altitudes greater than 3,000 feet are usually considered to be high grown. Coffee beans become harder the higher up they are grown so many countries use the term high grown in there grading systems.

Indonesia - Indonesia is a country famous for its world class coffees. Look for Sumatra, Java and Celebes for some of the best. No matter which coffee you decide on, be careful when selecting an Indonesian coffee because many display an earthy flavor that you will either love or hate.

Italian Roast - A term used for coffee roasted darker than medium brown. Heavy Roast may range in color from dark brown to almost black.

Jamaica - Jamaica's Blue Mountain coffees are some of the best and most expensive coffees in the world. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is considered a classic cup with a full body and extremely rich flavor. Unfortunately, there are not really any other Jamaica coffees worth mentioning.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee - Simply put, one of the most widely respected coffees in the world. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee has earned a reputation for being rich and complex.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Style - A blend of several different types of coffee in an attempt to imitate Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. This is basically just a marketing ploy and mant of these coffees do not contain a single Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee bean.

Java - A very well respected coffee which comes from Indonesia. Java tends to be rich in flavor and light bodied.
