Coffee Dictionary (B)



Balance - A term used to describe how well a coffee's characteristics compare to each other. A well-balanced cup of coffee would be one whose acidity, aroma, body and flavor are all equally strong. An unbalanced cup of coffee might have a strong aroma but a weak flavor.

Barista - A term to describe someone skilled in the art of making espresso. There is even a World Barista Championships overseen by the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe.

Batch Roaster - A machine used to roast one batch of coffee at a one time. The size of a batch is entirely determined by the size of the machine.

Blade Grinder - A small coffee grinder which uses a propeller-like blade to grind coffee beans.

Blend- A mixture of two or more different types of coffee.

Body - A term used to describe how heavy and rich tasting a coffee is. Body is one of the four main categories (acidity, aroma, body and flavor) used to describe gourmet coffee.

Bourbon - A variety of Arabica coffee bean which is grown widely in Brazil.

Brazil - More coffee is grown in Brazil than any other country in the world. However, most of the coffee which comes from Brazil is low quality and ends up on grocery store shelf. The best Brazilian coffee is Santos Bourbon which is both deep and complex, making it a popular choice among espresso drinkers.

Brown Roast - A synonym for coffee roasted to medium brown.

Burr Grinder - Sometimes referred to as a coffee mill, they use a small disk, instead of a blade, to grind coffee beans.
