Caffeine Content of Decaf Coffee

Decaffeinating coffee can be done by several different methods but the two primary methods either use water or a solvent to remove the caffeine. So, how successful are these processes? Well, to actually be called "decaffeinated," caffeine levels must remain below 2.5 percent of the coffee's normal caffeine content. So, no matter the no method, the caffeine content of decaf coffee ends up being about the same.

You might be interested though in knowing how much caffeine is in decaffeinated coffee when compared to other caffeinated drinks. Interestingly, decaffeinated coffee is not totally caffeine free, containing about 3mg of caffeine. A cup of drip brewed coffee has about 100 milligrams of caffeine; an espresso has about 80 milligrams of caffeine, while instant coffee has about 65 milligrams of caffeine. By comparison tea has about 40 milligrams of caffeine and a can of cola can have anywhere from 20-40 milligrams of caffeine. See the table below to see how the caffeine content of decaf coffee stakes up.

Brewed = 100mg of caffeine

Espresso = 80mg of caffeine

Instant = 65mg of caffeine

Cappuccino and Latte = 45mg of caffeine

Tea = 40mg of caffeine

Cola = 20-40mg of caffeine

Decaffeinated, brewed = 3mg of caffeine

Decaffeinated, instant = 3mg of caffeine
